Primera A - Colombia 2013 Preview & Results

A medical team, led Primera A - Colombia 2013 Preview & Results Dr. Pablo Gomez, practiced today in Bogota's first robotic surgery in Latin America to a child with Down syndrome, affected by a condition of chronic urinary retention.

"This is an intervention that leads us to major medical centers worldwide and certainly puts us far ahead in Latin America," he told reporters on doctor and clinic manager Marly, Luis Eduardo Cavelier, minutes before surgery.

The operation was performed with Vinci robot, an expensive technique that minimizes edge incisions, reducing healing area and patient recovery time.

This surgery is a laparoscopic procedure, which is performed through small incisions on a video camera that lets you see the patient intervention field in three dimensions and act on it with three articulated mechanical arms and directed by a doctor from a distance .

"We've been own learning curve of robotic surgery in adults and now we have specialists who have the knowledge to make the move to pediatric surgery," added Cavelier.

Paul, a two years and with down syndrome, was tapped to withdraw a mass located in the urethra, behind the bladder Primera A - Colombia 2013 Preview & Results urinary tract repair you from birth that have caused numerous infections and chronic retention.

The operation, four to ten hours, was led by director of Pediatric Robotic Urology Florida Hospital (USA), Dr. Pablo Gomez, who minutes before surgery said that "if there are no complications the patient may be home as soon as tomorrow. "

"A traditional surgery involves an incision in the abdomen very large and requires opening the bladder, robot assisted surgery is less invasive, faster recovery, no more precision in the movements of the surgeon, less bleeding and time hospitalization is minimal, "he said the surgeon.

Gomez stressed the importance of this intervention because it puts Colombia "in the forefront of robotics science in Latin America, hopefully this is the first of many interventions."

Produced in the United States in 1998, Da Vinci robotic equipment was first used in 2000 in adult surgery and came to Colombia in June 2012.

Currently being developed in different countries of the world, especially in operations pyeloplasty, dedicated to correct the blockage or narrowing of the ureter.

In Latin America there are a total of five machines Da Vinci: three in Brazil, Venezuela and another one in Colombia, according Cavalier, who made it clear that so far only been used in adults.
